Commonly Asked Questions
What is Coaching?
- Coaching helps individuals discover their path forward through exploration of strategies, tools, and resources that encourage and bring accountability to obtain their goals, take responsibility for their future, and provide transformation.
What Does LIFE Coaching Mean?
- Life coaching is a very broad topic and exactly as it sounds; meaning anything to do with life. What life coaching is NOT is counseling or advise giving. A coach is usually not a licensed therapist, meaning they are not able to diagnose a client. I have worked alongside clients that see a counselor along with their coaching and if needed, I can refer my clients out to a counselor.
Why Do I Need Coaching?
- Coaching is a great tool if you feel you are having trouble moving forward. Maybe you are in a transition season of your life, with big decisions, and no clarity or maybe you lack motivation and can't seem to keep yourself accountable when creating goals. Maybe you are wanting to live out a dream of opening a business or writing a book and need to externally process each step. These are not all of the scenarios I coach, but some examples of those I have experience coaching.
Is Coaching the Right Step For Me?
- One of my "go-to" metaphors for explaining if coaching or counseling is the right fit for you is through the depiction of a wound. When you poke a wound (in this case an area in your past) and it still triggers you, counseling is needed. If that wound from your past has become a scar and you are able to talk about it without too many negative emotions, coaching can be a great fit for you. Coaching is all about moving forward, while counseling is about your past. In coaching, I do talk about the past some and there may be some healing, but that is not why you would come see a coach. Specifically, coaching is when you need someone to help you explore possible options for you to take and keep you accountable throughout the process. I believe as a coach that you have the intuition within yourself to discover what is needed. I may not have expertise on the area you are being coached on, but that is because as a coach, I guide you to your own discovery through quality questioning. You need to be in a healthy mindset and motivated to be coached.
When is Coaching Not the Right Step For Me?
- This question piggy backs the previous question some. To reiterate, you would not get coaching if you are looking for someone to give you advice on a situation, such as a consultant or a therapist who are experts in particular fields. I also hesitate coaching someone who is highly triggered from certain areas of their past. When I have a client that still needs more specific therapies, tools, strategies, etc., I usually have a discussion to refer them to a counselor. At times, the client may continue coaching while seeing the other service provider (i.e. a counselor). A client that is not motivated to improve, complete the goals they come up with during our sessions, and move forward is not a good match for coaching.
How is Coaching Different than Counseling and Mentoring?
- I believe I have touched on the differences between counseling and coaching enough above. Mentoring is at times used in coaching if the client gives permission for me to "put on my mentor hat." Otherwise, mentoring is advice giving, in which coaching is not. Mentoring can also be similar to discipleship or a consultant. Both have more training in a specific area, and at times can be seen as having an expertise. Coaching is client centered! The client leads the conversation and makes their own action steps.
Would I Make a Good Coach for You?
- As mentioned above, I love clients who are motivated to see change within themselves, knowing it starts with them! Intentionality and discipline become very important in the coaching process. I like someone with an open mindset and an open heart to trust the process even when it can get uncomfortable. A positive perspective can go a long way! In the end, if you aren't sure, always feel free to make a FREE consultation appointment to see if I would make a good coach for you. I love hard but I also bring hard truth wrapped in grace, eager to see you succeed and walk into what that "more" is for you!
What is my Goal as your Coach?
- As your coach I want to help you explore options in order to help you move forward and succeed. Even more than that, I want to coach YOU, not your situation. I want you to believe the Truth about who you are, walking away with a new found confidence and boldness, knowing that your past only launches you into your destiny! I want you to always believe there is more for you and you have the victory!
